A collection of mostly formerly rare sessions made for Capitol during its first 11 years, this limited-edition box set is utterly astonishing, even for the Mosaic label. Unlike most of their other efforts, this is not a'complete' set, although each of the 65 sessions covered is complete, and the quantity and high quality are both superb. Included are thrilling sessions by Paul Whiteman , Nappy Lamare , Eddie Miller , Marvin Ash , Ray Baudac , Wingy Manone , Johnny Mercer , Scatman Crothers , Jack Teagarden , Kay Starr , Red Norvo and many, many more. This remarkable and highly enjoyable set contains many previously unreleased recordings, and M.

Osaic here brings to light 65 sessions recorded for Capitol by various groups of jazzmen between 1942 and 1953, their major connecting factor being that, for the most part, they have not been available since their initial appearance on 78s, EPs, and 10-inch LPs. Additionally, among the 254 tracks included, there are 46 that have never been issued in any form, some being alternate takes and others being wholly new performances.

Mosaic has already issued complete sets of Capitol recordings by The Gerry Mulligan Quartet , The Nat King Cole Trio , Duke Ellington , Stan Kenton , Jack Teagarden , The Benny Goodman Small Groups and The George Shearing Sextet , so selections from these are not duplicated here. Also omitted for reasons of space are the many sessions by Red Nichols , Billy Butterfield , Woody Herman , Charlie Barnet , Art Tatum , Julia Lee , Peggy Lee and Pete Dailey , as well as others of smaller output, such as those by Coleman Hawkins , L ennie Tristano , and Miles Davis. There is an LP-sized fully-illustrated informative 36-page booklet included, with a fully-detailed tracklist at the rear. The fantastic rarities on this collection are well worth seeking out, and this now discontinued set, a particularly hard to find gem, is a truly superlative offering and would make a stunning addition to any collection. He had been an avid collector of all things entertainment-related for a great number of years prior to his passing even commandeering an entire two rooms in his house for storage purposes - floors AND walls! Everything in his well-maintained personal collection is in a new/mint condition (although, understandably, several of the CD jewel cases have acquired one or two very minor surface marks during storage).
