This box celebrates the near 25 year partnership between Dutoit and the OSM. Contains a generous survey of highlights spanning a 20 year recording legacy. Charles Dutoit's 80th Birthday - 7th October 2016. Decca's association with Charles Dutoit and the OSM began when Ray Minshull (Executive Vice-President, Decca Records, 1980-94) chanced upon the orchestra and conductor in rehearsal.
This happened at a time when the label was looking for a way to fill the void in French repertoire which had arisen due to the death of Ernest Ansermet. The next piece of the puzzle was where to record. Fortunately the answer came in the form of the Église St Eustache which was located outside the city. The church soon became one of Decca's most loved venues due to its highly praised acoustic. The partnership's first Decca recording, Daphnis et Chloé (CD 1 of this set), captured the hearts of listeners around the world and the second recording, La Valse and Bolero (CD 2 of this set), became the first recording by a Canadian orchestra to go Platinum.
They went on to create many more landmark albums - both French repertoire - Ravel and Berlioz as well as celebrated recordings of Holst's The Planets and Falla's Three Cornered Hat. Dutoit and the OSM's recording contract began as digital techniques were becoming more widespread. The Decca engineers capitalized on these technical advancements creating recordings that encapsulate the Decca Sound of the digital era. CD1: Ravel: Daphnis et Chloé.
