REVIEW A variety of excellent recordings from an unexpected source Reviewed in the United States on 23 December 2010 James Levine is probably best known for his outstanding work conducting opera in New York, but he has also done some terrific work conducting orchestral music in chicago, Philadelphia, Vienna, and as I now know, Munich. This collection of live recordings from Munich include a terrific Mahler 9th, an excellent Brahms 1st, very good Bartok (Piano Concerto 3, Miraculous Mandarin, Bluebeard's Castle), and a variety of other works including some modern ones such as Gershwin, Harbison, and Ives among others.
The sound quality is excellent for live recordings, and while the Munich Philharmonic is not an'elite' ensemble, the orchestral playing is to a high standard. Levine's interpretations of Dvorak (none in this set unfortunately) Brahms, Mahler and many other composers are outstanding.
This collection covers a phase of his career previously, by me at least, overlooked, and as such is a valuable set. The photos form part of the description please message me if you need any further information. The CDs are in near mint condition. The cardboard sleeves are in very good condition with minimal signs of wear on the edges.
The booklet is in very good condition. The outer cardboard box shows signs of wear.
